Sports Update for Dec. 9: Men’s Basketball Rolling

The Virginia Peninsula Community College men’s basketball team began its busiest stretch of the season by going 3-0. Sincere Moore and Jayden Sepulveda led the way for the Gators, who are in the midst of playing seven games in 17 days before taking a break for the holidays.

Things got started with a 110-58 win over Johnston Community College (N.C.) on Dec. 4 at the SafeHaven Empowerment Center. Moore (Matoaca High School/Chesterfield) led five Gators in double figures with 19 points. He also had five rebounds. It was the second time in three games Moore had scored 19 points. Jayden Sepulveda (Landstown/Virginia Beach) had 16 points (a season high), seven assists and four rebounds. Daytwan Johnson (Booker T. Washington/Norfolk) added 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Chris Cyrus (Hampton Christian Academy/Newport News) chipped in with 11 points, and Asa Fehrenbach (Lafayette/Williamsburg) scored 10. Cyrus’ and Fehrenback’s points also were season-bests. The Gators, who were coming off an eight-day break, made 15 3-pointers, with Sepulveda accounting for four and Cyrus for three.

Three days later, they played the first of four consecutive road games, winning 75-62 at Oxford College of Emory University (Georgia). Moore, again, led the way, with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sepulveda had 14 points and seven assists. The Gators led 37-24 at the half. It was their first Region 10 game of the season.

VPCC finished off the week with a 77-68 victory at Central Carolina Community College (Sanford, N.C.) on Dec. 8. Moore contributed 21 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Sepulveda had 15 points and three assists. Keshaun Johnson (Nansemond River High School/Suffolk) scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots.
